When God Looks At You, Who Does He See?

when god looks

I’ve always heard this quote and thought it was positive.
So positive that I’ve taught it to be true.

And I know that through a theological lens there’s nothing wrong with it,
but it has actually always left me feeling…well, unliked.

If God sees Jesus when he looks at me, then what’s the point?
Why create any of us if we’re all supposed to get this Jesusy face-lift?
Why spell out the creation of animals and let them stay uniquely them, and not humans?

I believe that because of Jesus, when God looks at you
He sees YOU!

You.

God’s word speaks to us and through us in Christ and “no creature is hidden from it, but rather everything is naked and exposed to the eyes of the one to whom we have to give an answer [Heb 4:13; CEB].”

I believe that through Jesus, God loves you uniquely.
And all your faults,
weakness,
and failures…

He doesn’t love you in spite of them.
He loves you because of them.

Otherwise, this would be a really stupid bible verse:

“Finally, let’s draw near to the throne of favor with confidence so that we can receive mercy and find grace when we need help [Heb 4:16;CEB].”

Problem here! What I ponder more than a little is… O.K. if we are already loved, why make any changes to who we are?  Doesn’t make sense. Sorry to drop this on a COLD Monday morning!  Just got back from Yosemite. Attended the little church in the valley there…more than awesome-  10 degrees, snow, waterfalls etc. And the service was O.K. too.

I believe that the first step is to accept God’s love in our current condition. Knowing our frailty and weakness and then understanding that GOd loves us anyway produces the desire to respond to that love. With the help of the Holy Spirit, our life becomes a response to God, in which we “make changes to who we are.”

If we don’t accept that love first, then when we better ourselves, we do it to GET God to love and accept, we try and earn it…which is anti-grace.

    Acceptance is job one.
