Jon Acuff, the Stuff Christians Like blogger, is a writer. He writes.
He has always been a writer. In his dreams, he has been a writer. As he travels across the country, a writer. In the hallowed halls of Dave Ramsey’s Entreleadership…a writer. You know what he was when he was working at jobs that he hated? A writer. And at jobs that made him feel like he wasn’t a writer? A writer.
You may think the above paragraph is a little redundant. While I prefer ‘emphatic’, ‘necessarily repetitive’ may be a better description.
Quitter is a book for dreamers. It’s a book about being a something while you’re busy doing something else. For instance, my son wants to be a Jedi, but he a second grader. While I was on staff at CBS Television City, I wanted to be a rock star. I even quit my job so that I could finally become a Rock Star! If only…if only I had read this book first.
Jon Acuff shares his story, his journey to becoming a full time writer. If you have ever quit a job or ten so that you could finally focus on your dream, so that you could eliminate all obstacles in the way, then you need to read this book. Well, that’s not true actually, because if you haven’t learned by now…10 resignations later…this book won’t tell you anything you don’t already know. However, if you are thinking about leaving where you are so you can start “living the dream,” buy this book now!
Acuff helps us see that where we are probably has alot more to do with where we want to be than we think. Quitter is a “how to” book, but only insomuch as it helps the reader reframe how they think about what they’re doing while they work on their dreams. You have to pay the bills. You have to feed the kids and keep the lights on. Quitting doesn’t pay next month’s cell phone bill. Quitter, on the other hand, helps put all of this in perspective.
If you have a real life, a real job and real dreams that don’t fit in either…buy the book. I read it in two sittings. Acuff’s narrative is fluid and fun. After years of reading Stuff Christians Like, Quitter was a fun way to get to know the author again.
Go on…you know you want to read it!
