A Colossians Twitter Mashup

The Challenge:

“I am now rejoicing in my sufferings for your sake, and in my flesh I am completing what is lacking in Christ’s afflictions for the sake of his body, that is, the church. [Col 1:24]”

And the Response:

While the life of Christ achieved tetelestai on the cross, the suffering of his body did not. The enduring afflictions that are left to the church act as a defining characteristic, lasting tension, through which we experience what Franz Wright calls Christ’s “appalling and incomprehensible mercy.

twitter as futurist

This is a look at a mock vote taken through Twitter’s Twitvote. Granted this has everything to do with social cool and general computer literacy, but does it not say something about the future? What can the Republican party do today that will make a difference to those who are growing up in a post modern / computer literate future? McCain may win this election, but can the political landscape remain unchanged beyond the next election…or more specifically, the one after that?

I suggest not.

Twurch: spiritual twittering

caliga.png little while ago I wrote a post about possible uses for Twitter in relationship to worship. I recently got a Twitter that my favorite moderator was thinking about using Twitter in a worship service. So I can’t wait to hear how that works out. However, today, I read about the absolute coolest use of Twitter thus far.

Scott Hodge, pastor of the Orchard, is teaching on Spiritual Disciplines. You can listen to the podcasts here. This last week, Hodge focused on Fixed hour prayers or “the Hours.” Here’s what he had to say on neue:

And so as a way to help encourage our church community to experience the beauty of these prayer rhythms, we encouraged everybody to sign up for a free Twitter account so that they can be automatically notified via text message when a new prayer is posted on The Orchard Blog.

We’re posting three times a day (morning, noon, night) and we’re encouraging people to allow these notifications to interrupt whatever it is they’re doing so that they can take a couple of minutes to pray at the designated times.

sign up here to join the Orchard in this prayer discipline. Way to go Scott and the Orchard crew!

Here is another resource I use daily.

That sermon was Tweet!

Our Wednesday night worship has a talkback component that is just awesome. The peeps who come and worship love the time at the end of the night where we talk about what they heard and experienced.

I, like many, have been wondering how to use new media as a worship tool. So…what if, what if we allowed the congregation to Twitter their way through the service? Instead of turning off their phones, we could encourage them to engage in a shared experience. Many younger folks are texting anyway, why not direct them?

This could accomplish several things: one) get a larger media connection going on with the church community, two) give worship leaders instant feedback on what is going on during worship(good thing or no?), and three) encourage a postmodern participation in worship thing on a new level.

Any thoughts? Has anyone tried it already?
