My 3.5 word 09 goals
January 10, 2009
Breathe. Choose. Risk.
chrisbrogan.com ran a post about consolidating your 09 goals into three words that can focus you over the course of the year…simple to repeat, simple to remember. I went through a dozen variations. Some word combinations made me into a media legend, others a ministry juggernaut. But now my three…well, I just hope they help me to stay sane.
1. Breathe: I’m a breath holder. I forget to exhale. It’s like my DNA is altered just enough to make me a water creature, but not enough to be able to compete with David Blaine. If I could chill out just enough to breathe in 2009, that would be a radical maneuver.
2. Choose: I’m a possibilities guy. I analyze information and create likely scenarios. While this would be extraordinarily advantageous in, say, the DOD, it’s not so great in family, ministry and life. In 09, I want to practice the art of choice. Choosing a path rather than mapping it. Choosing a direction, rather than testing all of them. Choosing what is important to me and prioritizing that over and above what I perceive the needs of others to be.
3. Risk. Let me say it again, Risk. I want to live in such a way that I stop protecting the world from Jesus. This is the year I stop protecting the church from Jesus. This year, I open a can of Christ and see what the Word of God can do (Han Solo quotes flying through my head).
3.5. Repeat.
That’s it. Might have to try it again in 2010, but for now, I pray I get through the cycle at least once.
Bob Hyatt did this exercise, but stuck to two words that are so interlinked and interrelated the sentence they form is, in its extreme, undeniably awesome: Kick Ass!
Does it get better than that?

first, let me applaud the phrase “open a can of Christ…” It gave me quite a giggle.
I definitely understand the idea of mapping but not choosing. my word for 2009 is “harvest,” which also the meaning of my name. This is a year of doing, not planning.
I just updated the bio on my site, and I’m obsessed with fours. My four words are Priestess, Magelet, Artist, Guide. A bit of a change, but it really provides me with focus to have this concise self definition. I understand why a Christian might prefer threes.
