Here We Go…
May 7, 2007
A while ago, I was studying the OT prophets and couldn’t get away from the idea of their pop status. These darkhorse bluesmen were the mouthpiece of God; cultural critics and stage stalking poets. If the prophets were alive today, they would wear too much leather (except when directed to walk around naked) and move like Morrison. They would sing too loud and made their elders uncomfortable. They would push kids too far and get ‘em saying “screw the establishment” and “so’s your old man!” They wouldn’t care what Simon said and definitely wouldn’t do Oprah. They would be irascibly punk and unperturbedly Miles. We’d buy their records on iTunes. We’d pay outrageous prices to see them live. We’d wear their T-Shirts to church. What they had to say then, we could hear now. Look at American Idiot. It sold a butt load of copies. It won a shelf load of Grammies. It was a great record and scathingly honest. It’s pop and prophetic. It’s worldview rests in shiny production and post “Basketcase” lyrics. There’s something deeply resonant there…for me any way.
This is my third run at blogging. Previous incarnational blogistry was done at a site called radiorebellion. That was great fun, but it’s a new day with new purpose. I’m not all together sure what that purpose might me, but at least you know how I named this site.
